Academic Integrity

When you are studying with us we maintain academic, integrity and quality standards that are reflected in all class work and assessments tasks.

As a higher education student, we expect you to learn and display these standards in your assessments by using academically appropriate language, style, grammar, formatting, and avoiding plagiarism through correct referencing. At Sydney International School of Technology and Commerce (SISTC), we are here to support you with developing the knowledge and skills to maintain academic standards.

Good academic practice

Good academic practice means that you show personal integrity and a respect for academic scholarship. When we assess your understanding of a subject by assessment tasks, such as essays, reports, and projects, you may need to do some independent research. To do this research, you will reference the work of various scholars who are authorities in the field. This is normal academic practice because all academic scholarship depends, in some way, on building on the work of others.

Plagiarism and cheating

Plagiarism and cheating can be intentional or unintentional attempts to deceive the marker or examiner. They can be seen as acts of academic misconduct for which students may be penalised as described in the rules and School policies relating to student misconduct and appeals.

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • copying words, or ideas, from websites, reference books, journals, newspapers or other sources without acknowledging the source.
  • paraphrasing (to change the words but keep the ideas) material taken from other sources, without acknowledging the source.
  • downloading material from the internet and including it as part of your own work without acknowledging the source.
  • copying work, such as all or part of an assignment, from other persons and submitting it as your own work.

When completing your assessment tasks, you need to make sure that you use a referencing system to acknowledge your sources. At SISTC, we have a range of resources and workshops to help you get ahead with your referencing and to understand academic integrity.

Databases

Our databases provide collections of resources: journal articles, e-books, newspaper articles, and videos. Our collection also focuses on specific subject areas (e.g. information technology).

Getting Started

The Student Success Hub at Sydney International School of Technology and Commerce (SISTC) aims to improve the academic experience for all students by supporting and motivating you to do the best work you can and by developing skills for succeeding with your academic studies and improving your job-readiness.

Our academic support is delivered via the following three main channels: online academic skills resources, individual and small group consultations, and in-class skill development.

A range of resources, in-class and online help is available to help students develop important academic skills and achieve success in the workplace.

What is referencing?

When you use academic sources in your assessment tasks, you must correctly reference and cite those sources in your work.

We choose to use one of the most popular international referencing systems known as the APA 7th Style. It is an author-date referencing style used across a wide range of subject areas. It is based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition.

You must use it to avoid plagiarism, and also to support your ideas and arguments. At SISTC you will have the help of our friendly Student Success Hub staff to assist you in using the referencing style for your assignments.
